This is 100% Fiano. It’s a medium bodied wine from Benevento in southern Italy. A little peachy number both in style and fruit character with hints of spice, rounded and lingering in the mouth. It is well worthy of its great value trophy.

Food: Shell-fish dishes and antipasti, white meats and cheeses.

Zalze Shiraz Mourvèdre Viognier 2014 Waitrose £5.99 (until 26th July) 14.5%

Made mostly from Shiraz with a bit of both Mourvèdre and Viognier in the blend for complexity and perfume, this is a plush red with spicy cherry flavours. A little oaky and a lot spicy. Fabulous value and dangerously delicious!

Philippe Michel Crémant de Jura from Aldi £7.49 12%

Brilliant value fizz from a little known area of eastern France, the Jura. Made from 100% Chardonnay in the same way they make Champagne, this is a bit of very affordable sophistication. Crisp, appley and toasty; complex with fine bubbles and in a funky bottle.
