La Garnacha 2014 Salvaje del Moncayo 13.5%
Majestic £7.99 (mixed 6 price) and The Wine Society £7.75
This is a steal. Garnacha (or Grenache as it’s also known) has really lovely jammy aromas and flavours. This one also has a bracing freshness. The wild red fruitiness mingles perfectly with just a hint, but a very classy hint, of oak. A memorable eye-catching label, too.
Food match: Chorizo, spicy dishes or on its own in front of the fire with a good book.
Champagne Veuve Monsigny Brut NV 12.5%
Being the Champagne nut that I am, I need an everyday go-to Champagne. And this is it. Apparently I am not alone as 1 in 12 bottles of Champagne bought in the UK is from Aldi, so they say. There is no sharpness in the wine. It has rich apple pastry flavour, is very slightly nutty and livens up the palate with a vibrant fizz. It tastes great and it hasn’t broken the bank. Happy days.
Food match: Hard cheeses, soft cheese, fish, shell-fish, white meats. Perfect on its own listening to carols while decorating the Christmas tree.
