torres days of SummerDays of Summer Torres 2015 12%  £6.99 Co-op, £7.49 Majestic (6 bottle price)

This is 100% Muscat. The unusual thing about Muscat is that it actually has hints of grapey aromas unlike almost all other varieties. It also smells enticingly of orange blossom, white peach and exotic fruits. It is light, just off dry, with a lemon grass zing. The equivalent of an alcoholic elderflower cordial. From Chile, putting a taste of South American sunshine in your glass.

Food match: Perfect for drinking on its own, but great with light Chinese dishes and white fish.

chapel down english roseChapel Down English Rosé 2014 11% £10.99 Waitrose or £50 for 6 (£8.33 a bottle) direct from the Chapel Down

Made from Pinot Noir and the less well-known Regent, Rondo and Pinot Meunier, with aromas of red berries and flavours of strawberries and cream. Throw in a hint of rhubarb, too, and you couldn’t have a more English wine! Elegant, delicate and beautifully …easy.

Food match: salads, prawns and Summer Pudding.

Lidl prioratPriorat Crianza Vinya Carles 2012 14% £5.79 Lidl

Goodness me, this is great value. The area of Priorat in north east Spain makes top, read pricy, red wines. It’s not often you find one under a tenner. This one is just over a fiver. And it’s a perfectly good example of the style; you’ll discover black fruits, a spiciness and an earthy edge in its dark, concentrated depths. It’s also peppery with a hint of mint. Oh, and a little violet creeps in, too. Lots of complexity for the price. Don’t delay in filling your trolley with this because I’ll be in Lidl filling mine. The shelves could be empty before too long.

Food match: Venison, peppered steak, mature, strong cheese
