Majestic Médocs

Yesterday evening I presented a Médoc masterclass to enthusiastic and attentive Majestic employees. We had 8 wines to taste, mostly from the Majestic range, one from each appellation of various vintages. Each wine was a winner. They showed perfectly why Bordeaux, and in this case even more specifically the Médoc, has developed the reputation it has and commands the prices it does. Or does it?

Many of the wines were outstanding value for quality at the list price. But then I was told that currently on the fine wine deals of mixing and matching 2 or more bottles the prices dropped considerably. Two such were Château Coufran 2004 from Haut-Médoc and a Moulis Château Haut-Franquet 1998, both Cru Bourgeois classified, each at £19.99. Cynics amongst you might think that they are reduced to £14.99 and £13.32 respectively to shift them on pdq – I suspect you are right. But the thing is, the wines are delicious, drinking beautifully and if you find yourself snapping up a case or two and not drinking them in the next couple of weeks, don’t worry – they have a good few years in them yet.
